About me
Gemma has been Science Lead Teacher at Haringey Learning Partnership (AP) since September 2022. Previous to this she has 9 years experience working in mainstream school science departments in Sheffield, Rotherham and London as a classroom teacher, and Head of Chemistry, as well as teaching in an internal AP within a mainstream school.Since taking on the role of Science Lead at Haringey Learning Partnership she has been on a journey learning how to develop a challenging, engaging and enriching science curriculum suitable for the young people we work with. She set out from the start with the intention for our science curriculum to be as good as, if not better than, that students would receive in mainstream school, but also be able to reengage students in a subject which is often seen as 'too difficult', 'not for them', and 'boring'. As part of this she found a community of science teachers in AP settings on Twitter which became invaluable for advice and support especially when you can feel very alone as a subject leader in AP. From this grew a formal network - Science in AP - which in Summer 2023 brought together over 20 science teachers from AP settings from across the country to share their experiences, resources and discuss science education in AP.
